ARTIST’S STATEMENT

I believe that everything in nature has a distinct personality—a 'face' that tells a story of quiet strength and beauty. Whether I am capturing the intense gaze of an animal or the delicate petals of a flower, my work is an act of portraiture that exists at the intersection of a scientist’s inquiry and a naturalist’s reverence.

By utilizing a rigorous, academic approach to light and form, I strive to 'sculpt' my subjects with oils or pastels. This allows the viewer to move beyond mere observation and into a state of profound, singular focus. For me, painting is a meditative and methodical pursuit of clarity where I seek to translate the 'Old World' quietude of natural history into a modern, minimalist context. It is an attempt to reconcile the timeless beauty of the physical world with the structured precision of the modern mind.

ABOUT INDEE MOSS (b. 1981)

Indee Moss approaches the canvas with a unique duality: the disciplined mind of a scientist and the soul of a lifelong naturalist. Holding a PhD in Chemistry and a Master of Accounting, Indee spent a distinguished career mastering the complexities of the physical world before dedicating her practice to contemporary realism. This scientific foundation grants her a methodical and analytical approach to painting.

Trained in classical atelier traditions of drawing and painting, Indee’s work serves as a bridge between "Old World" quietude and contemporary realism. She utilizes a slow, intentional process to distill complex natural subjects into their essential forms. Whether working in oils or pastels, her focus remains on the "sculptural" quality of light—using value and form to carve her subjects out of the darkness and into a singular, focused clarity.

Currently working from her studio in Ames, Iowa, Indee's work has been recognized with an Artists Network Award and exhibited at various institutions across the country. She continues to explore the quietude of the natural world, capturing the timeless spirit of nature through a modern, scientific lens.
